Where the VW40 airbag ECU sits

On most VW Group cars the airbag ECU (SRS control module) is mounted low in the centre of the vehicle, typically on the transmission tunnel under the centre console, roughly between the front seats or under the radio/climate stack. It is bolted to the body so it sees the impact directly.

Exact position varies by model and year, so always check a model-specific guide or the wiring diagram for your car before removing trim.

Safety first: before you touch it

An airbag module is part of a live safety system. Before removal:

  1. Switch off the ignition and remove the key / stop the keyless system.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
  3. Wait the manufacturer-specified time so the system fully powers down before disconnecting the module.
  4. Avoid static discharge and handle the unit carefully.

If airbags have deployed, the deployed components and any damaged wiring must be replaced by a qualified technician.

Removing the module

Once it is safe and powered down, remove the centre console trim to reach the module, unclip the connectors carefully, and unbolt the unit from its bracket. Note the orientation and connector positions for refitting.

Read the part number from the label (1EA / 5WA / 1ED 959 655 xx) and confirm it against the VW40 part number guide.

After removal
